What are the key elements that make mentoring work?
Oct 03, 2023In the coaching world, it is well known that there are three elements that make it work. I think these same elements work well for having effective mentoring conversations. So, what are they:
1️⃣ How do you structure the conversation? What model do you use?
My preferred coaching model is the Dialogic Orientation Quadrant (DOQ) Haesun [hey-sun] Moon developed. I find it works so well, it is simple and when I am developing mentors it is easy to learn. But it also works well in any conversation.
2️⃣ What conversational skills are key?
After 22 years of coaching these are what I think are key:
➡️ Building trust and being present
➡️ Listening for the brilliance (as I learnt from Elliott Connie)
➡️ Powerful Solution Focused questions
➡️ Showing empathy
➡️ Providing and receiving feedback
3️⃣ How do you show up for the conversation? What is your way of being?
This is probably the most important element as mentees can feel and notice if you are being non-judgmental or don't have their best interests at heart.
